Weed resistance is a hot topic for any farmer or crop adviser. While most growers are acutely aware of the issue, barriers can prevent efforts to manage weed resistance. A rural sociology professor at Iowa State University led a survey that questioned more than 350 certified crop advisers nationwide. Results showed that 75% of crop advisers are moderately or very concerned about managing herbicide resistance in the next five years.
Advisers see the opportunity to enhance awareness of the issue among growers but find barriers, such as fatigue, that stand in the way of a sound resistance management plan. But the most pervasive wall is farmer mentality. 85% of respondents agreed farmers are going to have to change their mindsets to effectively manage pesticide resistance instead of waiting for a ”silver bullet” that likely won’t ever come.
