Patriotic American FlagThe National Crop Insurance Services (NCIS) just released two new short videos highlighting the continued strength and nationwide reach of the federal crop insurance program in 2025 — a record-setting year for farmer participation and protection.

The videos underscore a simple but important point: in an environment defined by tighter margins and increased weather volatility, farmers are leaning more heavily than ever on crop insurance as their primary risk management tool.

In 2025, farmers purchased 2.54 million crop insurance policies, protecting a record 561 million acres and over $159 billion in liability. Just as notable, producers invested more than $6.25 billion of their own money to secure that coverage — a clear signal of confidence in the system.

Here’s how that participation breaks down across the country.

Top States for Policies Sold (2025):
Kansas — 289,000
Texas — 259,000
North Dakota — 199,000
Iowa — 187,000
Illinois — 179,000

Top States for Liability Coverage (2025):
Iowa — $16.4 billion
Illinois — $14.3 billion
California — $13.7 billion
Minnesota — $11.3 billion
Nebraska — $10.4 billion

This distribution highlights the diversity of American agriculture, from Midwest row crops to high-value specialty crops in the West, and the scale of protection required to keep the system functioning.

Perhaps most importantly, the videos reinforce that crop insurance is truly national in scope. Policies were sold in every state in the country, protecting farmers from coast to coast and across all types of commodities.

Bottom line: participation is growing because the system is working. As risk in agriculture continues to rise, crop insurance is proving to be the most reliable and widely used tool available to America’s farmers.
