A new program launched by Land O’ Lakes’ sustainability provider Truterra, LLC, will begin paying farmers for generating and selling carbon credits as early as this summer. The new program named TruCarbon will facilitate the sale of carbon credits, with buyers like Microsoft already on board. The company will spend this month connecting farmers and retailers to begin data collection next month, and that data will be verified through soil testing in May before farmers start to receive checks. Agribusinesses involved in the effort say it’s a “shot in the arm” for developing a market that some call “unlimited” in its potential for both farmers and ag retailers, both in the short term and how carbon credit sales could contribute to farmers’ future crop rotation decisions.
