Last week’s Supreme Court ruling favoring the state of California in the highly contested Proposition 12 case has left the pork industry in a tailspin. The ruling adds significant uncertainty and confusion to the future of pork sales and other out-of-state commerce happenings.

Pork producers are looking for answers, as the new law allows California to inspect farms across the country to make sure they’re compliant with the ruling. California consumers eat about 13% of all U.S. pork yet less than 1% of pork is produced in the state. Even so, California consumers will likely be the ones paying for the new law.
