Animal disease is a risk any livestock producers face. But the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association says producers can stake steps to lessen that risk before bringing new animals into their operation. Biosecurity remains one of the most immediately impactful ways producers can mitigate the spread of diseases.
The following are a few ways that mitigation can be better achieved:
- Only purchase cattle from a reputable seedstock operator
- Whole herd test to catch chronic diseases
- Quarantine all new cattle for a 21- 30 day period
- Work with your veterinarian to discuss a biosecurity plan before an outbreak.
