The USDA’s weekly Crop Progress Report reveals that 40% of U.S. corn and 30% of U.S. soybean planting had been completed as of Sunday, May 4. This puts planted soybean acres 7% ahead of the five-year average while corn remains 1% ahead.

States farthest ahead of average in planted corn acres include:

  • South Dakota at 39%
  • Colorado at 37%
  • Kansas at 50%

As of May 4, 11% of the U.S. corn crop has emerged. This is 2% ahead of the five-year average.

Soybean planting continues to progress with the following states ahead of last year and the five-year average:

  • Iowa at 38% planted
  • Nebraska at 34% planted
  • South Dakota at 25% planted

Seven percent of the U.S. soybean crop had emerged as of May 4. This is 2% ahead of the five-year average.

Spring wheat planting is 10% ahead of the five-year average at 44% complete. Thirteen percent of the spring wheat has emerged. This is 4% ahead of the five-year average.

Winter wheat conditions improved 2% from the previous week. An estimated 51% of winter wheat was rated in good to excellent condition. Kansas, the top winter wheat producer, experienced 45% of the crop headed. This is 19% ahead of the five-year average.
