Gevo is planning a major expansion of its ethanol plant in North Dakota that could significantly increase corn demand and strengthen local markets. The project includes adding a second production facility, which would double output and expand the company’s capacity, especially for low-carbon ethanol used to produce sustainable aviation fuel.

According to the USDA, North Dakota produced about 711 million bushels of corn in 2025. One bushel of corn will produce 2.9 gallons of ethanol, according to the Renewable Fuels Association. If the plan is approved, the site could produce up to 150 million gallons of ethanol annually, while expanding carbon capture and producing additional co-products such as animal feed and corn oil.

The investment highlights continued momentum in the biofuels sector, as companies look to scale production and meet growing demand for lower-carbon fuels.
