10% of Wisconsin Dairy Operations Exited the Business in 2019

Wisconsin lost 10.7% of its licensed dairy farms in 2019. The National Ag Statistics Service says a total of 818 farms were lost last year compared to 691 farms in 2018 and 503 in 2017.

As of January 1st, there were 7,292 dairy farm operations in Wisconsin compared to 8,110 on the same date a year ago.

Forest, Florence, and Oneida counties in north-central Wisconsin have no remaining dairy farms, and Milwaukee County has just one left. Clark and Marathon counties in central Wisconsin continue to have the most dairy farms.

There has been a trend of herd size growth and nearly steady milk production, but Wisconsin milk production fell 1.6% from November 2018 to November of 2019.
