E15 sales in the U.S. grew 62% in 2021, according to data from the Renewable Fuels Association (RFA). The 15% ethanol blend was boosted by a recovering U.S. economy and wider availability of the fuel. The RFA is taking the opportunity to bolster the appeal of year-round E15 sales to the Biden Administration to combat higher fuel prices.

The Trump administration made a similar allowance, but a federal appeals court ruled that it was an overreach of its authority. Both Iowa and Kansas attorneys general asked EPA administrator Michael Regan to issue an emergency waiver to allow summertime sales of E15. Sales are currently barred as a precaution against suspected air pollution.
