Boasting the largest federal investment in land stewardship since the 1930’s dust bowl, farm state Democrats have proposed a $28 billion allocation for conservation and climate-smart agriculture practices included in the Build Back Better legislation currently in negotiations. The amount allocates $5 billion in cover crop payments for both farmers and landowners, offering $25/acre on up to 1,000 acres for farmers establishing cover crops and $5 for non-farming landowners to incentivize sowing cover crops on rented land. The amount nearly doubles the 5-year budget outlined in recent farm bills. Read more on the conservation investment here.
