While some trends can raise eyebrows and pass just as quickly as they came, an Ernst & Young food and agriculture leader says three consumer food trends in 2023 shouldn’t be ignored. Competitive and profitable farmers keep a close eye on emerging consumer trends as new market opportunities and profit potential can enter the playing field.

Three trends to watch closely in 2023 include:

1. Fresh and “uncomplicated” food. Consumers want foods with limited ingredients and are prioritizing shopping the perimeter of the grocery store for more fresh items.
2. Food miles are becoming mainstream. While “local” has been thrown around over the last decade, consumers are now tracking how long it takes their fresh items to get to their local store.
3. Younger consumers are willing to pay more than baby boomers and generation X for higher quality or regeneratively grown food.
