Rhode Island grower Ron Wallace has set a new world record with a 3,156-pound giant pumpkin, the first ever to top 3,000 pounds. For scale, it weighs more than twice as much as an average Holstein cow. The pumpkin was weighed October 10 at the Southern New England Giant Pumpkin Weigh-Off, beating the mark set by British grower Ian Paton one week earlier by nearly 300 pounds. Paton placed 2nd and 3rd with impressive pumpkins of his own at the global competition, at 2,857 and 2,773 pounds, respectively.

The United States had six pumpkins in the top 10 standings, coming from Rhode Island, Oregon, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, Ohio and Minnesota. The state of Wisconsin also had a strong showing, claiming 12% of the Top 100 pumpkins at sanctioned weigh-offs.
