A popular topic amongst politicians and the ag industry is private carbon programs. Experts are advising landowners, ranchers and farmers looking into the carbon market to make sure they fully understand the parameters to ensure it’s the right fit before enrolling. Pending legislation will provide more USDA regulation of private carbon programs but until then, participants need to do their due diligence to make sure: 1. Terms of any carbon contract matches the length of a leasing land agreement 2. Have a lawyer go over the contract and fine print 3. That landlords are also aware and part of the contract.
