President Biden announced Monday a $1 billion allocation to expand independent meat processing capacity. Additionally, the Biden Administration’s action plan also intends to strengthen and develop new rules under the Packers and Stockyards Act, as well as outlined a new “Product of USA” labeling rule. This announcement comes after President Biden shared in July a plan to improve competition and resilience in the meat and poultry industries.
The January 3rd unveiling was broken down into a four-pronged approach for a fairer, more competitive and more resilient meat and poultry supply chain. USDA says it reviewed more than 450 comments on how best to increase processing capacity and developed the plan accordingly along with stakeholder input. Other items announced by the Biden Administration include a new joint initiative of the Department of Justice and USDA to better coordinate efforts.
