In a 10-page bill, House Appropriations Committee Chairwoman Rosa DeLauro announced Tuesday new legislation aimed at ramping up USDA’s procurement of fresh fruits and vegetables. DeLauro cited the damage caused to families during COVID-19 where she believes hunger was exploited among low-income American families. The proposed Fresh Produce Procurement Act will aim to empower USDA to partner with growers, distributors and food hubs to distribute produce to community organizations. If passed, this legislation will help build the case for the continuation of the successful Farmers to Famliies Food Box Program, discontinued earlier this year. Read more on the legislation here.
