Consumers may find butter prices on the rise as the baking staple walks into its most in-demand time of the year. Butter prices have remained strong in 2022, traded by as much as a 15% premium, spurring foreign sales of U.S. butter. Butter prices in Europe and the U.S. were closer to $3.25 per pound in October, primarily due to sizeable domestic butterfat markets.
For farmers, strong butter prices have translated to healthy milk checks. For perspective, in January 2021, U.S. butter sold at $1.45 per pound. Just one year later, consumers were paying $2.61 per pound. While butter prices have softened, values will remain strong amidst the holiday season.
