The California Department of Food and Agriculture and the USDA National Agricultural Statistics Service project California will produce 29 million 40-pound cartons of Tango and W Murcott Afourer mandarin varieties. This is a major increase of 8 million cartons from last year.

Tree fruit set and diameter both increased, and planted area was 2,000 acres more than the previous year.

Navel orange production in California is forecast at 78 million cartons. This is a 2% increase from last year. Due to extreme heat spells during the summer, the oranges had the smallest diameter size in the previous 20 years. Forecasted utilized production is up from last year’s final production, but it is still below the 10-year average.
