Hereford cattleThe American Hereford Association (AHA) and Colorado State University (CSU) have partnered in a cooperative research agreement for sustainable genetics. Decades of AHA research and data collected by its members will be leveraged to characterize genetics associated with production efficiency.

The partnership comes when the beef industry is continually being asked to do more with less when it comes to environmental sustainability. According to CSU beef cattle geneticists, methane emissions are linked to some economically relevant production traits. CSU reports that criticism aimed at the beef industry regarding greenhouse gas emissions often has little context – something this project seeks to remedy while supporting the beef cattle industry’s goal of carbon neutrality by 2040.
