The Coronavirus Food Assistance Program (CFAP) was intended to help farmers make up for market losses caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. The application period ended last week, and as the Trump Administration touts “CFAP 2” this week, economists are tallying the total amount distributed as part of the $16 billion program and the geographic distribution of those funds. Thus far, $6.1 billion of the funds are unpaid, with the remaining 62% of CFAP funds distributed as of earlier this week. Most unpaid CFAP payments are earmarked for specialty crop and hog producers.
