Final planting dates to protect crop insurance coverage levels are rapidly approaching and farmers in most top corn-producting states seem to be on schedule. Several states are now in the crop insurance late planting window.

The final corn planting dates are:

  • May 25: Kansas, Nebraska, parts of Missouri, most of South Dakota and North Dakota, northern-tier states in Minnesota and Wisconsin
  • May 31: Iowa, most of Minnesota and Wisconsin, eastern Missouri, four southeastern counties in North Dakota, some of South Dakota, most of Kentucky and the bottom tier counties in Illinois
  • June 5: most of Illinois, Indiana, Ohio and Michigan

The final planting date is the last date to plant a crop with full crop insurance. Each day after this date results in a 1% loss of crop insurance coverage. Some states offer a 20-day late planting window for corn, while others have a 25-day late-planting period. The insurance coverage drops to 55% of the original guarantee for corn after the late-planting period ends.

Final planting dates for soybeans in the Midwest and Plains start on June 10. The yield guarantee for soybeans then decreases by 1% for 25 days. After that, it drops to 60% of the original guarantee.

The final soybean planting dates are:

  • June 10: North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, Minnesota and most of Wisconsin
  • June 15: Iowa, Michigan, northern Illinois and southern Wisconsin
  • June 20: Indiana, Ohio, most of Illinois and most of Missouri

The USDA weekly Crop Progress Report indicates 87% of the corn has been planted, with 68% rated in good-to-excellent condition as of May 25. Soybeans are 76% planted.
