More reports are showing just how hard COVID-19 hit the dairy industry and its resilient comeback. Around 349.9 million pounds of milk from all Federal Milk Marketing Orders (FMMOs) were dumped in April 2020 — this accounted for 2.57% of all orders. Industry experts say events like plant disruptions, maintenance or weather usually cause at least some small amount of milk to be discarded but never this much. To provide a comparison, in a typical month from 2015 to 2019 only about 0.4% of FMMOs milk was dumped. Insurance experts are citing the importance of implementing risk management tools, such as Dairy Revenue Protection, to safeguard dairy operations against economic impacts like the pandemic.
