More reports are showing just how hard COVID-19 hit the dairy industry and its resilient comeback. Around 349.9 million pounds of milk from all Federal Milk Marketing Orders (FMMOs) were dumped in April 2020 — this accounted for 2.57% of all orders. Industry experts say events like plant disruptions, maintenance or weather usually cause at least some small amount of milk to be discarded but never this much. To provide a comparison, in a typical month from 2015 to 2019 only about 0.4% of FMMOs milk was dumped. Insurance experts are citing the importance of implementing risk management tools, such as Dairy Revenue Protection, to safeguard dairy operations against economic impacts like the pandemic. Get the in-depth analysis of last year’s FMMO data.
