In a Hoard’s Dairyman webinar earlier this month, an Indiana dairy farmer said with the ever-changing dairy market, more operational focused is being placed on pounds of solids in their market, rather than pounds of milk. This shift in focus has further highlighted the role proper nutrition plays in terms of strong milk production.
The importance of high-quality forage remains essential to maintaining the highest level of milk production and the Indiana producer says they try to match the feed to the cow and push new feed every 45 minutes. Water remains the ultimate limiting factor in milk production and dairy producers are encouraged to keep water fresh, clean and available for cows to drink at their leisure.
