Heavy rains slowed planting across the country last week, yet progress remained ahead of the five-year average. The USDA crop progress report showed that 83% of the corn and 68% of soybeans were planted.

Corn planting added 13 percentage points last week, and the total crop planted remained one point ahead of the 82% five-year average. One area of concern is Pennsylvania. They reported 53% of the corn planted, which is 13 points below the five-year average. As of Sunday, 58% of the corn crop has emerged.

Soybeans planted gained 16 percentage points last week. That places the total crop planted at 5% ahead of the five-year average of 63%. As of Sunday, 39% of soybeans have emerged.

Spring wheat planting is also ahead of the five-year average. The report indicated that 88% of the spring wheat was planted. That is 7 points ahead of the five-year average. As of Sunday, 61% of spring wheat has emerged.
