North Dakota is stepping up statewide drought relief for livestock producers as dry conditions tighten their grip across the state. 96.8% of North Dakota is now in drought or abnormally dry conditions, with 38.6% in moderate drought, 26.4% in severe drought, and 5.9% in extreme drought.

The Drought Disaster Livestock Water Supply Project Assistance Program, administered by the North Dakota Department of Water Resources, is offering up to $10,000 in cost-share assistance per project, with producers eligible to apply for up to three projects at a time and up to $2 million in total program funding available. Funds can go toward new water wells, rural water hookups, pipeline extensions, pasture taps, contracted labor and equipment rentals.

Counties and tribal nations facing D2 (severe) drought or worse, along with neighboring areas, qualify for the program, which is funded by oil and gas extraction tax revenue. With 220 applications already received, North Dakota producers are encouraged to submit their application quickly before the $2 million cap has been allocated.
