Earlier this year, the USDA proposed a new rule requiring electronic tags for cattle and bison to aid in managing foreign animal disease. Language from the rule states must be legible and able to be read electronically if implemented.
More recently, the National Cattleman’s Beef Association submitted official comments to support the rule — both the benefits of the rule and the proposed timeline for implementation. If the rule is implemented, cattle 18 months and older will need electronic tags as early as the beginning of 2024.
