The Biden administration proposed a new rule this week pushing for changes to the “Product of USA” and “Made in the USA” meat labels. Currently, meat that’s only processed in the USA can qualify for the label, to the disadvantage of domestic meat producers, according to farm and ranch groups.
U.S. ranchers have pushed for the change, saying current rules could spur confusion for customers who believe they’re buying USA-based products. The labeling conversation has been a contentious one for years. From Country of Origin Labeling (COOL) in 2009 to other long-debated battles, President Biden’s currently proposed labeling rule will remain a voluntary one.
