An estimated $38 million of annual U.S. sweet potato and grapefruit export sales are in jeopardy as a result of a new French anti-waste law. Scheduled to go into effect January 1, 2022, the French law will ban all sales of produce with identification stickers within the country, generally used for tracking or marketing purposes. U.S. officials have expressed the negative effects this law would have on the disruption in trade to France in an effort to modify these restrictions, at least in the interim. While many label companies are working on the development of home compostable labels, it is estimated to be at least 3-5 years until they are fully implemented. Read more about this new law.
