Inflation is impacting every sector of the American economy, and the produce industry is no exception. Fresh produce prices are up across the board according to a new report covering the last four weeks of prices. The market research company, IRI, measured multi-outlet stores such as supermarkets, club, mass, supercenter, drug, military and other retail food stores and found grocery price inflation well above the already elevated 2020 and 2021 levels.
Fresh produce inflation reached double digits and 75% of consumers have already made one or more changes to their grocery shopping in February (up from 64% in January). Fresh produce sales reached $5.6 billion in February 2022, though volume sales declined from 2021. Limes lead the inflation trend with an increase of 57% per pound, followed by avocados at 36.6% and berries at 16%.
