Excessive heat warnings and high winds are fueling wildfires in the western U.S. — including some near the ag-rich Central Valley — while freeze and frost advisories are common in the northern Plains and northwestern Corn Belt as early-fall snow is moving into Colorado and through parts of the western Plains. Sharply cooler temperatures and much-needed rainfall will be common in the driest parts of the Corn Belt where crops are rapidly reaching harvest readiness sooner than normal.
