The nation’s fifth-largest meat packing plant, Greater Omaha Packing Co., has announced a multi-million-dollar investment to expand processing capacity. The South Omaha packer was recently awarded a $20 million USDA grant.

U.S. Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack announced the grant this week as part of an initiative to increase the competitiveness of the U.S. meat industry. Greater Omaha Packing says they will use the funding for part of a planned $100 million investment upgrade to their facilities. The upgrade will consist of automating freezers, expanding its wastewater system for increased capacity, remodeling critical areas for further value-added processing, and increasing its carcass holding coolers.

The Greater Omaha team estimates the expansion will help the facility process an additional 700 head of cattle per day. With 1,500 workers currently, the growth will require an additional 275 jobs.
