The U.N. has reported expectations that India could surpass China as the most populous country on the planet by this summer. But this is old news for the U.S. dairy industry who know India produces six times as much milk as China and twice as much as the U.S. And dairy consumption is there to match the massive production.

With any enormous producing-and-consuming country comes the potential for a slight shift to drastically impact the world market regarding dairy supply and demand. Diseases and weather concerns in the country limited production in the 2022 season, leading to tight feed supplies and more expensive input. But the country has historically been a small importer of dairy products and, for the last decade, has been a net exporter.
