U.S. milk production increased 1.3% in 2021, reaching a record 226.3 billion pounds. Most of the increase came from a small group of states. The nation’s top seven dairy states, when measured by total milk production, grew production by 1.7%, or 6.3 billion pounds. Meanwhile, production dropped in the remaining states, falling by 369 million pounds. California remains the leader as the nation’s top milk producer. Wisconsin also produced a whopping 953 million pounds of new milk last year.
Other states increasing milk production in 2021 include Idaho (1.1%), Texas (5%), New York (1.6%), Michigan (2.3%) and Minnesota (3.7%).
