A new world record has been set in Syracuse, Nebraska. On his 60th birthday, Duane Hansen hollowed out an 846-lb pumpkin he grew himself. Why? To sit in it as a boat and paddle down the Missouri River. Hansen floated 38 miles in his orange vessel, blasting the former world record of 25.5 miles set in 2018.
Hansen says the accomplishment was a 5-year journey to grow a pumpkin big enough to hold him. Upon successfully growing the pumpkin, Hansen named it Berta before squashing the world record. He says, naturally, the hardest part of the journey was keeping it afloat.
