While an apple a day keeps the doctor away, 24.4 million Washington-based organic apple cartons keep supplies tight and demand strong heading into 2022. On Christmas Day, the average price per carton of organic apples was $56.26, higher than the $39.83 average seen for conventional apples on the same day. The shipping point for organic apples was 3% higher than conventional, according to USDA data.
Both organic and conventional apple volumes are down, lending itself to higher prices. Orchards in the Pacific Northwest look to take advantage of the pricing opportunity and plan to expand organic acres in 2022.
