Rare mid-December tornadoes brought devastation across the South and Midwest, destroying thousands of structures. As many communities are without power or heat, inventory of the destruction is underway. One structure of note destroyed in the storm was a University of Kentucky research station located in Princeton, KY. The research station, established in 1925, is a crown jewel of the university’s Extension crop research efforts. The tornado also damaged farms within the storm’s path, including Kentucky’s largest corn maze located at A-Maize-ing Farms near Mayfield. Farms were destroyed in other states in the storm’s path including near Monette, Arkansas were farm buildings were obliterated. The Kentucky Department of Agriculture and the Kentucky Farm Bureau Federation have partnered to create the Kentucky Agriculture Relief Fund, where donated funds will be used for agricultural-related recovery efforts.
