Diversifying and expanding markets for homegrown commodities is a crucial driver to farmer profitability. Soybeans hold unique potential as a protein, an adaptable oil and a substitute for petroleum-based ingredients. Most recently, checkoff-funded work from the United Soybean Board spearheaded research to develop soy-based synthetic lawns.
Soybean oil can displace 60% of the petroleum-based polyurethane commonly used in artificial turf grass products. Partnering with SYNLawn, a synthetic grass company, USB aims to find a home for soybean-based turf grass in professional sports stadiums around the globe. SYNLawn’s bio-based turf collection leads the industry in sustainability and opens the door for markets and revenue streams for U.S. soybean growers.
