Grocery store shelvesDespite increased broiler production, total meat numbers are expected to decrease in 2022, according to the latest forecasts from the Livestock Marketing Information Center. This decrease follows a string of seven consecutive years of growth. Consumption forecasts are also predicted to decrease as well, down 1.8 pounds from 224.2 lb./person in 2021.

2022 meat production estimates:
>> Pork – 27.19 billion pounds (down 1.8%)
>> Beef – 27.39 billion pounds (down 2.2%)
>> Broiler chicken – 45.44 billion pounds (up 2.3%)

A combination of high feed prices, drought and unexpected variables will continue to impact meat production in the coming months and consumer prices are expected to maintain their current levels, which are up 14%-16% year over year.
