Though parts of the region received heavy rain in the last two weeks, high winds and low humidity since then has parts of the High Plains and Midwest under National Weather Service (NWS) Red Flag Warnings for enhanced fire danger. Massive grass fires were sparked in central and south-central Kansas earlier this week and officials there expect full containment to take up to five days. The NWS warnings earlier this week stretched to parts of Nebraska, Kansas, Iowa and Missouri. Farmers are encouraged to be extra vigilant for anything that might spark a blaze given the enhanced risk right now. A NWS Red Flag Warning means “critical fire weather conditions are either occurring now, or will shortly.
