While export opportunities typically aren’t thought to be in the power of individual producers, the National Pork Board contends that pork producers can strengthen global demand opportunities in two ways. One of those ways is to place emphasis on sustainability, often seen as a priority in export markets. When producers get involved in sustainability reports, international audiences pay attention, and are more likely to view U.S. pig producers as doing the right things for the environment, pigs and on-farm employees.
Another strategy producers can use to enhance foreign trade is taking traceability into account. The National Pork Board says the free app AgView helps pork producers by making disease traceback and pit movement data available to animal health officials in the case of a disease outbreak.
