View of field of cord seedlings in springThe USDA weekly Crop Progress Report stated 25% of corn and 18% of soybeans had been planted as of April 27. These gains came in the face of rains that limited field work but increased soil moisture.

The corn planting progress is 1% behind last year. However, it is 2% ahead of the five-year average of 22%. States farthest ahead of average include:

  • Kansas at 39%
  • Iowa at 34%
  • Texas at 74%

As of April 17, 5% of the corn had emerged.

The soybean planting progress is 1% ahead of last year and 6% ahead of the five-year average of 12%. The leading states are:

  • Louisiana at 70%
  • Iowa at 25%
  • Illinois at 22%

Spring wheat planting is 1% behind last year and 9% ahead of the five-year average. Nationwide, 30% of the spring wheat crop has been planted. South Dakota was furthest ahead of average at 79% planted. As of Sunday, 5% of the spring what had emerged.

Winter wheat conditions were reported as 49% good to excellent. This is an increase of 4% from the previous week. As of April 27, 27% of the crop was headed nationwide. Kansas reported 19% headed. This is 9% above the state’s five-year average.
