The National Milk Producers Federation (NMPF) and the U.S. Dairy Export Council (USDEC) are working to ensure the U.S. dairy industry gets as much value as possible from the Indo-Pacific Economic Framework for Prosperity (IPEF). The IPEF represents a proposed trade deal with 13 other countries. Negotiations on the deal will begin this summer.
Unlike traditional free trade agreements, IPEF is not designed to deal with tariffs – sure to be a sensitive topic and one that NMPF and USDEC are encouraging Biden to reconsider. Other highlights for the dairy industry include safeguarding common cheese names and cutting red tape by streamlining regulatory import requirements. The outlook is likely long and cumbersome, but the prospects in this region boast many opportunities for U.S. dairy producers.
