The annual Farms and Land in Farms report from the USDA revealed more farms moved into the largest farm category in 2022. Farm size is categorized based on sales, with the largest farms reaching $1 million or more in agricultural sales annually. These farms now make up 3.9% of all U.S. farms, which is a 0.9% increase since 2012.
These large farms are also bigger than they were a decade ago. As of 2022, they take up more than a quarter of U.S. farmland. A decade ago, they made up 20% of the land. The average size also increased by an average of 446 acres in the same period. The average farm in this category currently measures 2,927 acres.
