A new USDA report on food expenditures revealed foodservice spending is hitting record levels. Driven by a bounce back from the pandemic and pent-up demand, the April 2022 total surpassed the previous record set in July 2021. The April total, which incorporates restaurant and foodservice outlets, even topped pre-pandemic levels, up 11.6% when compared with April 2019.
Data shows that around March 2021, one year after the start of the pandemic, foodservice spending levels started to normalize and have continued to improve. Whether ongoing inflation levels will reduce this total in the long-term remains to be seen, but it’s clear that Americans have enjoyed a return to normalcy.
