U.S. Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack continues his efforts to reduce consolidation in agriculture. An effort, he says, that will spur improved competition and economical viability in rural communities. And consolidation goes beyond the secretary’s meat-packing efforts.
Vilsack announced this week that USDA is laser-focusing on creating fairer markets and, this time, targeting the seed and ag input sectors. The agency will collaborate with the Patent and Trademark Office, the Department of Justice and the Federal Trade Commission to form a working group on intellectual property and competition within the seed industry. U.S. Senator Chuck Grassley (R-IA) applauds the move.
